The overall focus at the PhD level is based on the study of muscles and its associated support systems under conditions of work or sport. Courses and research emphasize:
- the molecular, ultrastructural and biochemical differentiation and organization of muscle cells and cellular processes and their significance in excitation, contraction and energy metabolism during varying activity patterns.
- neural and endocrine control of the cardiorespiratory response to exercise.
- coordination between contractile and metabolic events occurring in muscle, and the functional alterations that take place in respiratory, cardiovascular, temperature regulating and substrate supply systems.
The MSc program is designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of how cardiorespiratory, metabolic and neuromuscular systems function as well as the relationship between these physiological processes. Basic or applied research may be conducted within an ergonomic, sport or health-related setting.
