About the Faculty of Arts

Admission Requirements
Printable Version Printable Version
The minimum requirements for admission to graduate work are the same for the Faculty of Arts as for the University of Waterloo, with the following exceptions:
  1. The Faculty of Arts interprets the admission minimum of a full B as 75%.
  2. Students admitted to Master's programs with either probationary or transitional status must obtain an overall average of 75% in all required courses. By no later than the end of a student's second term, departments are required to submit a report with respect to each transitional or probationary student, indicating that the transitional or probationary conditions have been satisfied.
  3. Applicants who are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must obtain a total score of at least 550 [and a minimum of 4.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE)] to be considered for admission (note that some departments require a higher score). A score of at least 220 is required on the computer version of the TOEFL. (See Academic Regulations - English Language Proficiency Certification for other acceptable tests of English.)
  4. Some departments in the Faculty of Arts require an average of 78% in the major for admission to their programs. Candidates should consult the admission requirements of specific departments.
