Chemical Engineering

Introduction

About Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering offers degree programs at both the master's and doctoral levels: Master of Applied Science (MASc), Master of Engineering (MEng), Doctor of Philosophy(PhD).

The University of Waterloo operates with three four-month academic terms in each calendar year. The minimum period of full-time registration for a MASc or MEng degree is two terms and the maximum allowable time is six terms of active registration. The minimum period of full-time registration for a PhD degree is four terms and the maximum allowable time is twelve terms of active registration.
Please note: there are registration fee implications for minimum length programs.

The minimum period of part-time registration for a MASc or MEng degree is six terms and the maximum allowable time is fifteen consecutive terms. The maximum allowable time for PhD programs in which students proceed to a degree totally on a part-time basis is 18 terms for a 2-year PhD and 21 terms for a 3-year PhD.

Extensions beyond the maximum periods may be granted by the Engineering Graduate Studies Office upon recommendation by the department which must include a realistic timetable for completion of the degree requirements.

A graduate student proceeding to a degree must maintain continuous registration, either active or inactive, in each term from the time of admission until the end of the term in which the requirements of the degree are completed. If students are unable to continue with their program of study, they may apply to the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research of Engineering for permission to register as inactive. No more than two consecutive inactive terms will be allowed.

Please refer to the Graduate Studies Calendar for information on transfer of academic credits.
