Teaching Assistantships

Each year a number of Teaching Assistantships are offered, worth $11,628.67(Ph.D.)and $10,931.59 (M.A.) in 2006-2007 to qualified incoming Ph.D. and Master's students. These figures may rise slightly from year to year. Teaching assistanships are payable over two terms beginning in September. Appointment for a second term is contingent on satisfactory performance of duties in the first term.

Entrance Scholarship

In addition, students may qualify for a University of Waterloo Entrance Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 ($1,000 per term payable over three terms). An 80% (A-) overall average is required.

Two or three University of Waterloo Entrance Scholarships in the amount of $5,000 per year (over three terms) may be available for outstanding students with "A" averages. Maintaining these scholarships is contingent on continuous registration and an average of not less than 80% overall.

Financial support is subject to annual budgetary constraints.

Department Scholarships:

Hugh MacKinnon Graduate Scholarships

The Department also offers one Hugh MacKinnon Graduate Scholarship in the amount of $1,200. This is a one time only scholarship payable in late September. The decision to award a Hugh MacKinnon scholarship is made by the History Graduate Committee. The criteria will include community service and work experience. Students interested in this scholarship should attach a one paragraph statement concerning their eligibility and forward it with the application form.

Dan Watt Scholarships

The Department also offers two Dan Watt Scholarships in the amount of $1,500 to incoming students with the highest averages. This is a one time only scholarship payable in late September. The selection will be made by the History Graduate Committee. Funds for this scholarship were bequeathed to the University by Daniel G. Watt who was a member of the University of Waterloo's Laurel Society. The Laurel Society recognizes individuals who make planned gifts to the University.

Balsillie Fellowships

In addition to its regular funding outlined below, the UW History Department is pleased to be able to offer several Balsillie Fellowships (worth $15,000 annually) for qualified graduate students in History. Balsillie Fellows will be offered co-operative job opportunities as research assistants with leading international scholars at the world renowned Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo.
