The University of Waterloo is recognized as a leader in encouraging and spinning off new companies-fully 22% of all spin-off companies from Canadian universities in the past decade come from UWaterloo. The Conrad Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology Centre was established to build on this strength and support as well as to the University's entrepreneurial initiatives. The Master of Business, Entrepreneurship & Technology (MBET) degree is designed to increase the chance of entrepreneurial success.
The full-time MBET program is designed to create future business leaders during an intense 12 month program. The program is specifically designed with the entrepreneur in mind. MBET's objective is to provide an outstanding "knowing-doing" educational adventure that aspires to enhance an existing entrepreneurial orientation with knowledge of contemporary business principles. The MBET program assists graduates to achieve exceptional accomplishments by providing the business skills that are critical to identifying, pursuing and exploiting commercial opportunities and to translate these ideas and innovations into commercial success.
MBET's uniquely designed curriculum is the embodiment of this vision and represents the map of how this innovative program will be accomplished. The curriculum replicates the entrepreneurial process – concept/seed, product development and market development – and introduces subject matter, not in a traditional stove-pipe or term-by-term fashion, but as it is required in each phase of the entrepreneurial process.
Heavy emphasis is placed on the "doing" element. The primary purpose of class work is to support the entrepreneurial effort and further the progression of ideas. A two term commercialization practicum provides practical experience in the early stages of entrepreneurial commercialization, company structure, financing and IP issues. The Applied Business Leadership Skills course provides the finishing touches that create a fully informed entrepreneur.
MBET's unique blend of courses, seminars, practicum, speaker series, case studies and mentoring are accomplished by faculty, collaborating closely with advisors and community associations.
