Biology

Research Areas

Plant Biology

  • Phytogeographic, morphometric, cytotaxonomic and chemosystematic studies of North American flowering plants, particularly Asters, Goldenasters and Goldenrods (Fam. Compositae).
  • Plant senescence and the effects of UV light, freezing and drought stress on plant gene expression and physiology.
  • The mechanisms of freezing tolerance in plants; characterization and cloning of genes encoding antifreeze proteins.
  • Basic and applied aspects of lignocellose biosynthesis and degradation. Secondary metabolism in plant tissue culture with emphasis on solving problems associated with industrial scale-up. Applied free radical chemistry.
  • Molecular aspects of plant responses to ultraviolet light. Gene expression, adaption and protein degradation.
  • Anatomy of vascular plants. Mapping pathways of transport in plant roots using fluorescent-dye tracers and ultraviolet microscopy.
